Celebrating the Arts, Culture and People
Our mission is to create a single resource,
a focused reference point for information about all art-related and cultural affairs within the Pasadena region. One key element of that mission is to publish comprehensive local event news and previews. As of today, our Events Calendar and Previews section feature information on over 500 area events, exhibitions, films, and cultural happenings. We're mindful not only of the public demand for this information but also event planners, benefit chairs, government officials, patrons, business owners and managers, and supporters of the arts and culture — all of whom need a platform for communication and coördination. We've designed these departments to be easy to use yet fully informative. The Events Calendar is a clickable calendar which takes you immediately to summaries of all known events for that day; the Previews Section contains more in-depth coverage of the events, organized by type of event (Music, Theatre, Benefits, etc.). As you'll see from the updates, we're publishing revisions at least twice weekly. And we list events as far out as February of 2006 for advance event planning and date conflict resolution! DATABASES How'd we tackle this massive undertaking? We've created software interfaces and several large databases: An events database, an organizations directory, and a "who's who" directory. The key to the events database is our Events Editor, Candice Merrill. Candice "harvests" events information by constantly checking the websites of hundreds of local organizations. She then enters the information into our especially-created software interface. This work currently requires almost 20 hours per week of her time. (Of course, we would appreciate any information that could be sent to us via e-mail as well: candicem@pasadenalivingmagazine.com .) The organizations directory has been published in its initial draft form as our Community Resource Directory , which you can access now. It lists over 360 local organizations (some rather obscure), along with their web address when available. This, too, will be perpetually maintained and updated. It will be made available in Adobe PDF format for publication upon request. Our "who's who" directory, similarly, will be published on October 1st. It will be issued regularly every 6 months. INPUT AND FEEDBACK: WELCOMED! All of this work is pointless without it being thoroughly useful to you. Please let us know how we might improve our publication to provide you with more useful information, or easier-to-use formats. And of course, if you know of an upcoming event — even if it's not to be held until next year — please do let us know. |
